The Tomioka Racing TR-ES2053 High-Capacity 19-Row Oil Cooler Kit is primarily designed for Subaru BRZ, Scion FR-S, Toyota 86 / FT86, and Toyota GR86 vehicles equipped with the Tomioka Racing TR-TS1053 or TR-TS1063 Turbo Kit.

Turbocharging increases the thermal load placed on the engine during boost, spirited driving, track use, and extended high-load operation. The TR-ES2053 was developed to provide the additional engine oil cooling capacity recommended to complement the TR-TS1053 and TR-TS1063 turbo systems.

Compared with the standard TR-ES2040 16-row oil cooler kit, the TR-ES2053 features a larger 19-row oil cooler core for increased heat-dissipation capacity and uses a dedicated lower-left-side mounting configuration designed to work with compatible Tomioka Racing turbo kit installations.

The larger 19-row system adds approximately 0.40 qt (0.38 L) of additional oil capacity. The additional oil volume provides greater thermal capacity alongside the larger cooler core, making the TR-ES2053 particularly well suited for turbocharged applications operating under sustained load.

The TR-ES2053 also incorporates a temperature-controlled oil sandwich plate with a built-in 180°F thermostat. The thermostat keeps the external oil cooler bypassed during initial engine warm-up, begins opening at approximately 180°F, and is fully open at approximately 190–195°F as additional cooling is required.

180°F Thermostatic Oil Control

The thermostatic oil sandwich plate allows the engine oil to warm up normally before additional cooling is introduced. The external cooler remains bypassed during initial warm-up, the thermostat begins opening at approximately 180°F, and is fully open around 190–195°F as engine oil temperature increases.

This is especially useful for turbocharged street vehicles because it provides normal warm-up behavior during everyday driving while making the additional cooling capacity of the 19-row core available during boost and sustained high-load operation.

TR-ES2053 vs. TR-ES2040

The TR-ES2040 features a compact 16-row oil cooler and approximately 0.30 qt (0.28 L) of additional oil capacity. It serves as Tomioka Racing's standard oil cooling solution for BRZ, FR-S, Toyota 86 / FT86, and GR86 applications.

The TR-ES2053 steps up to a larger 19-row oil cooler with approximately 0.40 qt (0.38 L) of additional oil capacity. It is specifically positioned for TR-TS1053 and TR-TS1063 turbocharged applications and uses a dedicated lower-left-side mounting configuration designed around these turbo systems.
