1.1 vs 1.3 Bar Wastegate Springs for Tomioka Racing Turbos

1.1 vs 1.3 Bar Wastegate Springs for Tomioka Racing Turbos

If your turbo uses a pneumatic internal wastegate actuator, the actuator spring is the foundation of boost control.

Choose the wrong spring and you may:

  • ✔ lose the ability to run a true low-boost map, or
  • ✔ struggle with unstable boost when targeting higher boost.

This guide explains what the spring actually does, the difference between 1.1 vs 1.3 bar, and how to choose correctly.

What the Wastegate Spring Really Does

The wastegate actuator spring sets your base boost (also called gate pressure). This is the boost level where the wastegate starts to open on its own, before the boost controller steps in.

Important rule:
👉 You cannot reliably run boost lower than the spring rating.

Your boost controller can raise boost above spring pressure, but it cannot consistently command boost below it.

This is why a “valet” or true low-boost map isn’t possible with a spring that’s too stiff.

Tomioka Racing Spring Options

Tomioka Racing offers two actuator springs for TR billet wastegate actuators:

  • 👉 1.1 bar (16.1 psi) — Red tint
  • 👉 1.3 bar (19.1 psi) — Silver tint

Color is only for identification and does not affect performance.

Spring Pressure vs “Max Boost” (Common Confusion)

When customers ask, “If I choose 1.3 bar, what max boost can I run?” There are two different limits being confused.

1) Boost You Can Control Cleanly

Boost control works best when gate pressure is close to your target boost.

A common rule-of-thumb (from GFB):

  • 👉 Acceptable control up to about 2× gate pressure
  • 👉 Best control when gate pressure is 10–20% lower than target boost

Typical control-friendly ranges:

Spring Gate Pressure Typical Stable Targets
1.1 bar 16.1 psi ~18–28 psi
1.3 bar 19.1 psi ~21–32 psi

These ranges describe boost control stability, not engine safety.

2) Boost Your Engine & Turbo Can Safely Handle

Safe boost depends on:

  • ✔ turbo efficiency and heat
  • ✔ fuel quality and knock margin
  • ✔ intercooling and intake temps
  • ✔ exhaust backpressure
  • ✔ engine and drivetrain limits
  • ✔ tuning quality

Bottom line:
The spring sets minimum boost and boost stability, not “safe max boost.”

Why a Stronger Spring Can Make More Power

High exhaust backpressure can push the wastegate open early.

If you see:

  • 👉 boost drop at high RPM, or
  • 👉 very high duty cycle just to hit target

your spring may be too soft.

Moving from 1.1 → 1.3 bar can help the boost control system keep the wastegate shut, improving boost stability—even at the same target boost.

How to Choose the Right Spring (Simple Method)

Choose 1.1 bar (16.1 psi) if:

  • 👉 You want a real low-boost or street map
  • 👉 You value flexibility for heat, traction, or daily driving
  • 👉 Your targets are mostly high-teens to mid-20s psi

If you ever want ~15–16 psi, 1.3 bar is not the right choice.

Choose 1.3 bar (19.1 psi) if:

  • 👉 Your “low boost” is already around 19 psi
  • 👉 You spend more time at higher boost targets
  • 👉 You want more control margin against backpressure and creep

Quick Decision Guide

  • ⚙️ Target boost ~18–22 psi → 1.1 bar
  • ⚙️ Target boost ~22–28+ psi → 1.3 bar
  • ⚙️ Multiple boost maps → Choose based on your lowest boost setting

⚠️ Important Warning

Spring change = tune change. Always.

Changing actuator spring pressure requires:

  • 🚗 re-checking minimum boost
  • 🚗 re-adjusting boost control settings

Never assume boost will behave the same after a spring swap.

FAQ

Can I run less boost than the spring rating?
No. Spring pressure sets the minimum boost.

Does a 1.3 bar spring automatically make more boost?
No. It raises minimum boost and can improve stability, but tuning controls final boost.

Do I need to retune after switching springs?
Yes. Boost control must always be recalibrated.
