2022+ Subaru WRX Turbo Shootout: AMS Tests TR VB670 | VB870 Upgrade Guide
TURBO TECH / 2022+ SUBARU WRX / FA24DIT
How did the TR VB670 perform in AMS Performance's independent turbo shootout? Here's what the numbers mean for a 2022+ WRX build — and where the larger TR VB870 fits in.
On October 20, 2026, AMS Performance published a comparison of the factory turbo and seven aftermarket upgrades on the same 2022+ Subaru WRX. The Tomioka Racing TR VB670 (TR-TS1055) was one of the turbos tested.
What AMS Tested
AMS used the same WRX, Dynojet 424x, E60 fuel, and matched boost targets across the test. The goal was to compare spool response and exhaust backpressure under controlled conditions, not to find each turbo's maximum horsepower.
For the VB670, three numbers stand out:
AMS SHOOTOUT | TR VB670
2,680 RPM
Reached 90% of the 14 PSI boost target — 330 RPM after the factory turbo (2,350 RPM).
7.4 PSI
Engine exhaust delta pressure at 6,000 RPM and 14 PSI boost, compared with 11.1 PSI for the factory turbo.
2,780 RPM
Reached 90% of the 20 PSI boost target. The factory turbo was not tested at the same 20 PSI target.
What Those Results Mean
At 14 PSI, the VB670 offered responsive boost while showing less measured exhaust restriction than the factory turbo at 6,000 RPM. That lower exhaust delta pressure indicates the engine had less pressure to work against at that test point.
The numbers are useful for understanding the trade-off between response and airflow. They are not a promise of identical results on every WRX, nor do they establish the VB670's maximum power.

TR VB670 vs. TR VB870: Which Fits Your Build?
Both are direct-fit upgrades for the 2022+ Subaru WRX FA24DIT, but they are designed with different priorities: street response versus greater top-end airflow potential.
RESPONSIVE STREET UPGRADE
TR VB670 TR-TS1055
Designed for quick boost response and balanced street performance.
Compressor wheel: 54.37 / 67.50 mm
Turbine wheel: 54 / 49 mm
Bearing: Dual ceramic ball bearing
HIGHER-AIRFLOW UPGRADE
TR VB870 TR-TS1056
Larger compressor and turbine wheels offer more airflow headroom for higher-boost, higher-output builds.
Compressor wheel: 61.76 / 76.68 mm
Turbine wheel: 60 / 55 mm
Bearing: Dual ball bearing
What About Horsepower?
Tomioka Racing has published separate dyno results of 375 WHP at 19.5 PSI on 93-octane fuel for the VB670 and 510 WHP at 24 PSI on E40 for the VB870.
Important: Those runs used different boost pressures and fuels, so the figures are not a direct comparison. The VB870 was not included in the October 2026 AMS turbo shootout.
Which TR Turbo Should You Choose?
Choose the TR VB670 if your priority is responsive street performance with independent matched-boost test data to reference. Consider the TR VB870 if you are planning a higher-output build that needs greater airflow and top-end headroom.
Whichever direction you choose, proper tuning and supporting modifications should match your intended power level.
